The Sleepy Hollow Edition, Part I

Today, unpacked and as "settled in" as I can be for the moment, with a slightly nightmarish moving day behind me, I was itching to get out and see the town. Not to mention sample yoga studios, check out the library, find some friends to run with/drink with, etc. ...

My new apartment is .7 miles from the Hudson River, just north of the Tappan Zee Bridge, and most of all, I am dying to go for an exploratory run in the riverside park I discovered there today. Fabulous views are in store for the lucky runner who gets her arse out of bed in time for a sunrise run! (Yeah, right.)

The unfortunate however is, the cold and cough that overtook my already stressed immune system last Tuesday, on my house-hunting trip to Rockland/Westchester, lingers on. It's a cruel summer sickness -- I can't remember the last time I felt this bad in warm weather -- and it keeps hitting me hard just when I think it's about to leave me alone and let me have fun again.

My outing began with driving through Sleepy Hollow and then through Tarrytown, in search of the right park, since there are a few nearby. (SH is to Tarrytown as Ballston Spa is to Saratoga Springs, in size, set-up and charm-factor, except the two towns sort of just fade into each other within a half-mile stretch along Route 9, rather than maintain distinct, distanced borders.)

I picked Patriot's Park, in the middle of town, and parked. I got as far as lacing up my sneakers; I even slathered sunscreen on my pale pillowy face, which has been spending far too much time inside lately. But from there it was a total loss, as I realized I was wobbly, lightheaded, hot and hungry. Zapped of energy and motivation, I headed back to the car.

I drove aimlessly, got honked at by one of those real friendly downstate NY drivers while trying to execute a left turn, turned right, and drove aimlessly some more. That's when I turned down toward the train station and discovered the park and Riverside Drive.

But, all I could think about was ham (!), and how badly I wanted to put it in an omelet with pepperjack cheese and tomatoes, with buttery toast and creamy avocado on the side. The park would have to wait. So my second trip to the local C-Town Supermarket was made in as many days, and a ham omelet was had. Plus all the sides, and watermelon and tea.

The rest of the evening was spent in a haze of napping and snacking and chatting. Now I think it's time for bed. This whole running to explore the town thing might have a chance of happening tomorrow.

  2. You're right, it does need a new name. But one day I will move out of Sleepy Hollow, so I think it needs a non-place-specific new name. Any suggestions, anyone?
